Minnesota’s Torii Hunter, angered after he is hit by a pitch, picks up the ball and fires it at Indians pitcher Danys Baez in the 5th inning of an 8 – 5 Twins win. Hunter’s throw hits the pitcher in the leg but he stays in the game. After the game, Baez goes into the Twins clubhouse to apologize. Jim Thome, Bill Selby and Ben Broussard homer for the Tribe, while David Ortiz and Dustan Mohr hit two-run homers. Rick Reed wins but has to shoo away a seagull, which walks out to the mound: it’s the gull’s third straight appearance.

The Red Sox defeat the Tigers, 9 – 4, as OF Manny Ramirez gets a career-high five hits, including a double and home run. Detroit 2B Damion Easley ties a major league record by being hit by pitches three times.

The Phillies slug three home runs in a 8-run 9th inning to come from behind and overtake the Expos, 11 – 8.

Reds P Chris Reitsma hurls a five-hitter, shutting out the Brewers, 2 – 0. The win ends a streak of 151 starts by Cincinnati pitchers without a complete game.

The Royals defeat the Angels, 12 – 3, as Raul Ibanez hits a grand slam in the 1st inning and a three-run home run in the 2nd inning to tie a club record with seven RBIs.

The Twins beat the Rangers, 5 – 4, despite a pair of home runs by Alex Rodriguez. The round-trippers give Rodriguez his 6th 30-home run season, breaking Ernie Banks’ record for shortstops.

The Tigers defeat the White Sox twice, 5 – 3 and 3 – 1, to mark their first sweep of a doubleheader in almost nine years.

The Marlins send P Ryan Dempster to the Reds for OF Juan Encarnacion, IF Wilton Guerrero, and minor league P Ryan Snare. Florida then sends OF Cliff Floyd, Guerrero, minor league P Claudio Vargas and $1.5 million to the Expos in exchange for Ps Carl Pavano and Graeme Lloyd, IF Mike Mordecai and minor league P Justin Wayne.

The Indians fire their manager, Charlie Manuel, and name third base coach Joel Skinner as the interim skipper. After issuing an ultimatum to the front office about his status, the 58-year-old is released after piloting Cleveland to a 39-47 record, 9 1/2 games behind first-place Twins in the AL Central.
