Due to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Major League Baseball postpones all games through September 17. The 91 missed games, the most regular-season contests not played since World War I forced the cancellation of the final month of the 1918 season, have been re-scheduled for the week after the regular season ends, meaning the World Series is likely to extend into November for the first time in history.

The Marlins’ Josh Beckett debuts with a 6-inning one-hit effort as the Fish beat the Cubs, 8 – 2. Beckett, who was 14-1 in the minors, also adds a double. Kevin Millar has a grand slam and Preston Wilson a three-run homer.

The Mariners clinch a tie for the playoffs with a 3 – 2, 11-inning win over Tampa Bay. The win gives the M’s a 99-39 record.

The Blue Jays roll over the sleep-walking Yankees, 14 – 0. Andy Pettitte lasts just three innings in losing to Chris Carpenter, who goes the distance, allowing six hits while striking out 11.

On Labor Day, in just his 11th start, Cardinals freshman hurler Bud Smith no-hits the Padres, 4 – 0. The 21-year-old becomes the 18th rookie since 1900 to throw a complete game without giving up a hit.

In a 11 – 7 loss to Columbus, Toledo gives up three runs on an unusual four-base error. With runners on first and second, catcher Dave Lindstrom pounces on a sacrifice bunt by Kary Bridges, starts to throw to third, then stops and rushes a too-high throw to first. The ball goes through the Toledo bullpen area to the fence about 60 feet from the foul pole allowing Bridges to easily circle the bases.
