1999 – Atlanta defeats the Mets, 4 – 2, in the opening game of the NLCS. Greg Maddux gets the win for Atlanta, as catcher Eddie Perez hits a home run.
An ailing Pedro Martinez, with both starters ineffective in the decisive Game 5 of the ALCS and the score tied at 8-8 in the fourth, enters the game and doesn’t yield another hit to the Indians for the next six innings. Troy O’Leary collects a grand slam and a three-run home run, both following an intentional pass to Nomar Garciaparra, contributing to the Red Sox’ 12-8 victory at Cleveland’s Jacobs Field.
1999 – Todd Pratt hits a 10th-inning home run off Matt Mantei to give the New York Mets a 4 – 3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in Game 4 of the NLDS. The victory clinches the series for New York.
The Houston Astros defeat the Atlanta Braves, 6 – 1, in the opener of their National League Division Series. Shane Reynolds gets the win for Houston, as 3B Ken Caminiti notches three hits, including a three-run home run.
The New York Mets defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks, 8 – 4, to take Game 1 of their NLDS. Edgardo Alfonzo hits two home runs for New York, including a game-winning grand slam with two outs in the 9th inning. Randy Johnson takes the loss for Arizona, his sixth consecutive defeat in postseason play.
The New York Yankees whitewash the Texas Rangers, 8 – 0, in Game 1 of their ALDS. Orlando Hernandez pitches a two-hitter for New York, while Bernie Williams hits a single, double and home run and collects six RBI.
1999 – The New York Mets shut out Cincinnati, 5 – 0, to become the National League’s wild card team. Al Leiter throws a complete game two-hitter for the win, as Mets shortstop Rey Ordóñez plays his 100th consecutive game without committing an error, setting a new major league mark.
Vladimir Guerrero, in Montreal’s 13-3 rout of Philadelphia at Veterans Stadium, hits two home runs, and his brother Wilton hits one round-tripper, making it the second time in their careers the siblings have gone deep in the same game. The Expos teammates also accomplished the feat last season in Cincinnati.
Mariano Rivera, although he gives up two hits, pitches a scoreless ninth inning, earning his 45th save of the season when the Yankees beat Tampa Bay at Tropicana Field, 3-2. The New York closer records more saves (45) than hits allowed (43) during his sixty-six appearances on the mound this season.
Rick Reed strikes out 12 batters without issuing a walk, hurling a complete game three-hitter in the Mets’ 7-0 victory over Pittsburgh at Shea Stadium. The win puts New York into a tie for the NL Wild Card with the Reds with one game left in the season.
