Veteran OF Rajai Davis has a surreal day: at 5:00 PM, he is taking batting practice with the Syracuse Mets in Allentown, PA, in anticipation of an evening game against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs of the International League. That’s when he gets the news that he has been called up to the major league Mets. He hires a driver to take him to Citi Field and after a two-hour ride, arrives there in the 3rd inning. He gets lost on his way to the clubhouse and has to ask for directions. He finally meets his manager and teammates in the 5th. He is then sent to pinch-hit for Drew Gagnon in the bottom of the 8th and hits a three-run homer off Sean Doolittle of the Nationals, capping a six-run inning. The Mets win the game, 6 – 1.

Two players manage a very rare feat for the Reno Aces in a Pacific Coast League game against the Tacoma Rainiers: Matt Szczur becomes the fourth player in team history to hit for the cycle, while Yasmany Tomas has a four-homer game in a 25 – 8 win. The two feats have been achieved simultaneously only once before in baseball history, when Lou Gehrig hit four homers and Tony Lazzeri hit for the cycle on June 3, 1932 in a 20 – 13 win over the Athletics.

The Astros win their 10th straight game when they defeat the Red Sox, 7 – 3, at Fenway Park in a rematch of last’ year’s ALCS. Houston chases Boston starter Hector Velazquez after just a third of an inning, as George Springer hits his first pitch of the game to deep center for a triple to open the floodgates. They score 5 runs before the inning is out, with Tyler White’s two-run double the crucial blow, and roll from there. Josh Reddick adds a solo homer as the Astros match the best start in team history at 31-15.

Kris Bryant hits three homers in consecutive innings – the 7th, 8th and 9th – to lead the Cubs to a 14 – 6 win over the Nationals. He is just the 12th player to pull off the rare feat, and the second to do so in those particular innings. He goes 4 for 6 and drives in 5 runs in the game.

Pitcher Edwin Jackson makes history by playing for his 14th team when he starts today’s game for the Blue Jays against the Giants. He was tied with Octavio Dotel for the record. Jackson is not involved in the decision as Toronto loses the game, 4 – 3.

Chris Sale strikes out 17 batters in 7 innings for the Red Sox against the Rockies, but a high pitch count costs him a chance to try to match or beat the record of 20 Ks in 9 innings. He has to settle for a no-decision as Brandon Workman gives up a two-run homer to Charlie Blackmon in the 8th. The Sox’s pitchers end up with 24 strikeouts in 11 innings, but Colorado still wins, 5 – 4.

George Springer has a great day, going 5 for 5 with 2 homers as Houston defeats Texas, 15 – 5, completing a four-game sweep. He starts his day with a leadoff homer off Adrian Sampson and caps it off with a two-run shot off Brett Martin in the 6th, also scoring five times. For his part, teammate Alex Bregman also homers twice and drives in 5 while Corbin Martin is a winner in his big league debut.

With a solo homer in the 3rd inning in a 13 – 0 win against the Tigers, Albert Pujols of the Angels becomes the fifth player in major league history to collect 2,000 RBIs. Many articles say he is just the third player to reach the milestone, but that is discounting the 224 RBIs collected by Babe Ruth before the statistic became official in 1920, placing him above the threshold, and the entire career of 19th century great Cap Anson.
