The Mets trade P Brian Bohanon to the Dodgers in exchange for P Greg McMichael. In the team’s game today, Benny Agbayani makes his major league debut, pinch-running in the 9th inning of an 8 – 8 game. He slips trying to steal and gets run down. Another Met runner is doubled off second base in the 10th and the Expos win, 9 – 8.

Benny Agbayani, Norfolk Tides outfielder about to be called up to the Mets, is married at home plate to his fiancee Neila before the Triple-A All-Star Game between the Internationaland Pacific Coast Leagues. Agbayani, from Hawaii, and his bride wear Hawaiian shirts and have a receiving line of bat-toting ballplayers. The IL whips the PCL, 8 – 4.

Ila Borders becomes the first female pitcher in history to start a minor league baseball game, as she hurls the first five innings for the Duluth-Superior Dukes in their 8 – 3 loss to the Sioux Falls Canaries in the Northern League, surrendering five hits and three runs, while registering two walks and two strikeouts,. Borders is tagged with the loss.

In the highest-scoring game in All-Star history, the American League beats the senior circuit, 13 – 8, in the thin air at Coors Field in Denver in the 69th All-Star Game. The 21-run total surpasses the previous record set in 1954 when the American League beat the Nationals, 11 – 9 in Cleveland’s Municipal Stadium. Baltimore’s Roberto Alomar is named the game’s MVP, going 3 for 4 with a home run, RBI, stolen base and two runs scored.

The White Sox plate 14 runs – including 8 in the 6th inning – on 12 hits against Red Sox pitching, but it’s not enough for a win. Boston strokes 20 hits and pushes 15 runners across for a 15 – 14 victory.

In a game that is halted for 3 1/2 hours by rain and takes 6 hours, 9 minutes to complete, the Rangers beat the Mariners, 9 – 2.

Toronto defeats Tampa Bay, 2 – 1, with the help of 7 1/3 strong innings by Roger Clemens. In the game, Clemens fans Devil Ray LF Randy Winn for his 3,000th career strikeout. Only 10 other pitchers have reached that mark in major league annals.

Hot-hitting Manny Ramirez hits two more homers, one a grand slam, in the Indians’ 12 – 3 win over Kansas City. Manny had two homers on July 3.

Defeating the Orioles 1 – 0, the Yankees improve their record to 61-20, equaling the best 81-game start in major league history. The mark matches the record of the 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates and the 1907 Chicago Cubs.
