In the 7th, Bobby Cox decides to rest his regulars and sends a record six pinch hitters to the plate, including the first five batters, another record.

Tom Glavine notches his 20th victory of the season as the Braves beat the Mets at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, 11-2. The southpaw becomes the first National League hurler since Ferguson Jenkins (1973) to win 20 games in three consecutive seasons.

1993 – The Phils lose, 6 – 5, to the Expos when John Kruk makes a 9th-inning error. With their second loss in three games to Montreal, the Phils’ lead drops to 4 games with 11 to play. Their biggest lead has been 11 1/2 games.

Mike Stanley, with the Yankees trailing by two runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, hits a pop fly to left field for the apparent third out to end the game, but time had been called just as the pitch was delivered due to a fan running out onto the Yankee Stadium field. Given a second chance, the Bronx Bomber catcher singles, which is followed by a Wade Boggs hit, a walk to Dion James, and a Don Mattingly single that drives in two runs to beat the Red Sox, 4-3.

Ranger right-hander Nolan Ryan, in his next to last major league appearance, fans California catcher Greg Myers for his 5,714th and final career strikeout. The ‘Ryan Express’ will end his 27-year career ranking first all-time in strikeouts.

In a last try for the pennant, the Yankees obtain 40-year-old vet Frank Tanana from the Mets for minor league P Kenny Greer. Tanana will go 0-2 to finish out his career at 240-236, and set a major-league record for most wins without racking up a 20-win season.

The Rockies defeat the Dodgers, 12 – 3, as they surpass the four million mark in attendance, setting a new single-season record.

1993 – The National League announces realignment of its teams into three divisions, with Pittsburgh agreeing to move into the Central Division.

Mike Piazza sets the major league record for home runs by a rookie catcher when he hits his 29th round-tripper, a first-inning two-run shot off San Diego’s Doug Brocail over the center field fence at Jack Murphy Stadium. The National League’s eventual Rookie of the Year, who will finish the season with 35, breaks the mark set by Matt Nokes, who was a freshman backstop for the Tigers in 1987.

Royals C Mike Macfarlane twice is charged with throwing errors to first base following strikeouts in Kansas City’s 9 – 0 win over Chicago.
