San Francisco Giants relief pitcher Lindy McDaniel sets a National League record playing his 225th consecutive game without committing an error. The streak includes 108 chances handled successfully since June 16, 1964.
The Red Sox top the Tigers, 5 – 0. The game is historic in that it features a combined shutout by two pitchers over age 40, the first such contest in over a century. Tim Wakefield allows two hits in 8 innings and Mike Timlin finishes the game.
The Reds homer on three straight pitches against Jeff Samardzija in the 1st inning of their game against the Giants, taking an early 4 – 0 lead, but cannot hold on as San Francisco comes back to win, 6 – 5. Eugenio Suarez, Jesse Winker and Derek Dietrich are responsible for the early barrage, but the Giants come back starting with a three-run homer by Buster Posey in the 6th. Posey then hits a one-out double in the 9th; Brandon Crawfordfollows with a pinch homer off Raisel Iglesias to break a 4 – 4 tie. For the Reds, Kyle Farmer hits a solo pinch homer off Will Smith in the bottom of the inning, but it’s not enough.
The longest game in the history of Miller Park goes 18 innings before Ryan Braun ends it by driving the winning run with his 6th hit of the night. A two-run single with one out in the 18th gives the Brewers and 4 – 3 win over the Mets. Braun outhits all of his teammates, given Milwaukee only tallies 11 safeties as a team; in the winning rally, the Mets’ Chris Flexen walks the bases loaded before facing Braun.
2019 – Josh Phegley drives in 8 runs, thanks to a pair of bases-loaded doubles, a run-scoring single and a solo homer, to lead the Athletics to a 14 – 1 win over the Pirates. He sets a team record for most RBIs in a game by a catcher. The A’s rack up 16 hits, including three-hit game by Matt Chapman and Kendrys Morales. Even P Brett Anderson gets into the act, as he picks up two hits and reaches on an error, in addition to getting credit for the win.
Noah Syndergaard of the Mets pitches a complete game shutout and also homers off Tyler Mahle for the game’s only run as he defeats the Reds, 1 – 0. The last player to have managed that particular feat had been Bob Welch, back in 1983.
Uganda player-manager Bernard Adei and 16-year-old Nicholas Alumai combine on a no-hitter of Zimbabwe in the 2019 Africa Cup Baseball Championship.
The first Africa Cup Baseball Championship in 18 years kicks off. Host South Africa sets the tone for the event, routing Uganda, 18 – 0, as Rowan Ebersohn hits a three-run, 1st-inning homer off Allan Kabenge and Robert Lewis-Walker and Lloyd Stevens don’t allow anyone past second base. Zimbabwe beats newcomer Burkina Faso behind the pitching of Cliff Vint and Hloniphani Ngulube, 11 – 5.
Zack Wheeler has a career night for the Mets against the Phillies, as he gives up no runs on 5 hits in 7 innings while striking out 11, and also contributes at the plate with a double and his first career homer. New York wins handily, 9 – 0.
Will Benson has a four-homer game playing for the Lake County Captains of the Class A Midwest League. He finishes 4-for-5 with 8 RBIs in a 12 – 6 win over South Bend. His night’s work includes a grand slam in the 4th inning.
