Tough day at the office for Terry Mulholland. The Phillies P allows just two Card baserunners – Bernard Gilkey’s leadoff triple and double later – and loses, 1 – 0.

1990 – The Padres fire Jack McKeon, who has been the San Diego general manager for 10 years.

1990 – Doug Drabek wins his 20th game and Barry Bonds hits his 30th and 31st home runs, as Pittsburgh beats Chicago, 8 – 7. Two days later Bonds will steal his 50th base of the season.

1990 – In Toronto, the Red Sox beat the Jays, 6 – 3, to cut Toronto’s lead to two games over Baltimore. Boston has now won four out of five in the SkyDome, but has a 15-game losing streak to the Blue Jays at Fenway Park.

1990 – Cleveland trades pending free agent Bud Black (11-10) to Toronto for Mauro Gozzo, Steve Cummings, and Alex Sanchez. Black will sign with the Giants on November 9th.

Despite solo homers in the 5th by brothers Billy Ripken and Cal Ripken, both off David Wells, the Orioles lose 4 – 3 to Toronto. The Jays score three in the bottom of the 9th on Kelly Gruber’s home run to make a winner of reliever Willie Blair. The brothers Ripken will homer together one more time, in 1996, again in the same inning.
