In the small hours of the morning, the Blue Jays acquire SS Troy Tulowitzki from the Rockies in return for their own starting SS, Jose Reyes and pitching prospects Miguel Castro, Jeff Hoffman and Jesus Tinoco. Veteran reliever LaTroy Hawkins accompanies Tulowitzki to Canada. The deal is considered a surprise, as the hard-hitting Jays were thought to be looking for pitching in their quest to end a 22-season postseason drought.

The Mets acquire closer Tyler Clippard from the A’s in return for minor league P Casey Meisner, while the Red Sox trade OF Shane Victorino to the Angels for IF Josh Rutledge.

Alex Rodriguez joins the small club of players who have homered on their 40th birthday when he goes deep off Matt Harrison in the Yankees’ 6 – 2 win over the Rangers. Didi Gregorius contributes three hits, including a homer, and 4 RBIs.

The Royals acquire Reds pitching ace Johnny Cueto in a trade for three pitching prospects, Brandon Finnegan, John Lamb and Cody Reed. Cueto will prove key to the Royals winning their first World Series title in three decades.

The semifinal of the women’s bracket is held at the 2015 Pan American Games, with the winner advancing to the Gold Medal game and the loser taking Bronze. Canada starter Autumn Mills throws a four-hit, one-run complete game, but Canada fails to score against Esquiea Rengel for four innings, trailing 1-0. They then explode for six runs in the 5th on three hits, two walks, an error, a hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice fly. Becky Hartley’s two-run single off reliever Giddelys Cumaná puts Canada ahead for good, giving Venezuela the Bronze.

In his last start for the Phillies before being dealt to the Rangers, Cole Hamels throws a no-hitter against the Cubs, marking the first time Chicago has been no-hit since 1965. The 31 year-old southpaw joins Cliff Chambers (1951 Pirates) and Edwin Jackson (2010 Diamondbacks) as the only pitchers traded before their next start after hurling a no-no for their team.

Cole Hamels of the Phillies no-hits the Cubs, 5-0, at Wrigley Field. It is the first time the Cubs have been victims of a no-hitter since 1965.

Alex Rodriguez continues his remarkable comeback season by hitting three homers in an 8 – 5 Yankees win over the Twins. His third long ball ties the score against closer Glen Perkins in the 9th, and John Ryan Murphyfollows with a three-run game-winning shot.

2016 – In a bizarre incident, White Sox ace Chris Sale is scratched from a scheduled start against the Tigers because of what General Manager Rick Hahn describes as a “clubhouse incident”. Sale apparently was upset at this team’s decision to wear throwback uniforms from the late 1970s, including their infamous dark blue long-collared jerseys, and in a fit of sartorial criticism, destroyed the uniforms with a pair of scissors. Matt Albers makes an emergency start wearing the Sox’s 1980s white jerseys. Sale’s tantrum will result in a five-day suspension handed by the ChiSox and he will be traded for a package of prospects after the season.

The A’s make the first deal of the trading deadline season, sending P Scott Kazmir to the Astros in return for two minor leaguers, P Daniel Mengden and C Jacob Nottingham. In another deal, the Pirates re-acquire 3B Aramis Ramirez, who last played for them 12 years earlier, in return for P Yhonathan Barrios.
