Commissioner Bowie Kuhn, who favors a limited number of interleague contests, does not cast a vote of his own that could have potentially broken the impasse, citing the possibility of doing so at later date when the legality of his ballot, which is being challenged by the Senior Circuit, is resolved.

In Cincinnati, Don Gullett pitches a two-hitter to beat the Cubs, 1 – 0. The only run is a home run by Joe Morgan.

Two days after Phil Niekro’s no-hitter, the Braves purchase Joe Niekro, Phil’s pitching brother, from the Tigers.

In Milwaukee, an exhibition game between the Brewers and the Atlanta Braves draws 33,337. The Brewers win, 7 – 5 in the 4th and last exhibition between the two teams. But the big thrill is provided by Hank Aaron, who homers.

John Briggs of the Brewers goes 6 for 6 in a 9 – 4 win over the Indians. Jim Colborn (14-7) is the winner.

In an outstanding relief performance, Yankee Lindy McDaniel comes to the rescue of Fritz Peterson, who exits with a muscle pull in the 2nd inning, and allows just one run in 13 innings to earn a 3 – 2 victory over the Tigers. Horace Clarke’s home run is the game winner.
