His first hit is a 1st-inning solo homer off John Danks and his last one a walk-off three-run shot off closer David Robertson, giving the Blue Jays a 10 – 9 win over the White Sox.

On the day they retire Bernie Williams’ number 51 and unveil a plaque in his honor in Monument Park, the Yankees suffer their 10th loss in 11 games to fall to .500. The Rangers’ 5 – 2 win completes a three-game sweep, as a two-run homer by Adam Rosales off Chris Capuano, and two RBIs by Prince Fielder, account for the bulk of the damage.

Brian Matusz becomes the second pitcher this week to be ejected for having a foreign substance on him, after Will Smith. The Orioles’ lefty is tossed in the 12th inning of what is then a scoreless game against the Marlins. Miami scores on a bases-loaded single by Martin Prado in the bottom of the 13th for Dan Jennings’ first win as a manager, 1 – 0. Like Smith, Matusz will receive an eight-game suspension for his action.

In a meeting of the two teams sporting the best records in the majors, Kansas City defeats St. Louis, 5 – 0, in the first game of an interleague series. Kendry Morales homers twice and drives in all five runs to bring his RBI total for the season to 37, most in the American League. Chris Young improves to 4-0.

The Brewers’ Will Smith is ejected for having rosin and sunscreen on his forearm in the 7th inning of Milwaukee’s 10 – 1 loss to the Braves. Smith explains that he simply forgot to wipe off his arm before leaving the bullpen when called into the game. He will receive an eight-game suspension as well. The Braves are only up 2 – 1 when Smith gets thrown out, but the Braves tee up against his successors, Neal Cotts and Michael Blazek, to run away with the game.

Ryan Zimmerman of the Nationals connects for a walk-off homer off Yankees closer Andrew Miller in the 10th inning to give Washington an 8 – 6 win and put them into a tie for first place in the NL East with the New York Mets after starting the year 7-13. For Zimmerman, it is the 10th such home run of his career; for Miller, it’s a first blown save after converting his first 13 save chances of the season.

The Marlins go outside the box in picking a replacement for fired manager Mike Redmond, as General Manager Dan Jennings takes over as skipper. While Jennings has 31 years of professional baseball experience, it is largely as a scout and in front office roles: he has never been a coach or manager at any professional level. In his first game at the helm, the Marlins lose, 3 – 2, to the Diamondbacks in 13 innings as David Peralta drives in the winning run against demoted closer Steve Cishek.

Shortly after coming within one out of being no-hit by the Braves’ Shelby Miller, the Marlins fire manager Mike Redmond and bench coach Rob Leary. Justin Bour singles with two outs in the bottom of the 9th to break up Miller’s bid, but the Marlins still lose, 6 – 0, completing a three-game sweep. Expecting to compete this season, the Fish find themselves with a disappointing 16-22 mark.

The smokestacks at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, OH get a little hotter than expected, as a fire breaks out during tonight’s Reds game against the Giants. Firemen control the blaze while the game continues and no one is hurt.

Jonathan Singleton of the Fresno Grizzlies drives in 10 runs in a 17 – 6 beating of the Albuquerque Isotopes in the Pacific Coast League. He goes 4 for 6 with two homers, including a grand slam, in setting a new club record for RBIs.
