The Reds win game one against the Mets, 5 – 2, then complete the sweep as Tony Perez drives in all five runs to defeat the Mets, 5 – 3, in the nitecap. Perez puts the Reds ahead with a three-run homer off Tom Seaver in the 8th. Jim McGlothlin strikes out 12 in the game two win.

Deron Johnson hits three home runs, giving him four straight over two games, helping the Phils beat the Expos, 11 – 5.

Tony Conigliaro, who had gone 0 for 8 with five strikeouts for the Angels during their 20-inning loss two days earlier, calls a five A.M. press conference to announce his retirement. Later tests will show that the sight in his left eye, injured in a 1967 beaning, has deteriorated.

The Pirates again top the Braves, 5 – 4, behind Willie Stargell’s 30th home run of the season and his 10th off Braves’ pitching.

Braves SS Leo Foster makes a memorable debut. Against the Pirates, he errs on his first chance, hits into a double play in the 5th, and a triple play in the 7th. Pittsburgh rolls by Atlanta, 11 – 2.

The Yankees and Red Sox each collect 16 hits, but for the second day in a row the Red Sox hit four homers to win, 12 – 7. The Sox score six in the 6th when Rico Petrocelli hits a bases-loaded triple and George Scottand Joe Lahoud follow with homers.

Backed by a pair of homers. Mike Cuellar wins his 10th straight for the first-place O’s, beating Detroit’s Joe Coleman, 3 – 2.
