1965 – Tony Cloninger’s one-hit, 9 – 0 win is Milwaukee’s second straight one-hitter against the Mets, tying a major league mark set 48 years ago. Wade Blasingame, Billy O’Dell, and Phil Niekro combined the day before for a 3 – 1 win. In today’s win, Hank Aaron has two hits, a stolen base, RBI, and run scored before leaving for pinch hitter Johnny Blanchard.

The Angels waive Lou Clinton and both the Indians and the Athletics claim him. Since the rule on waivers is that the team lowest in the standings gets first dibs, Clinton joins the Athletics. He arrives in mid-game and appears as a pinch-hitter, striking out, as California beats the A’s, 7 – 2. He and the Athletics then learn after the game that Clinton has been awarded to the Indians because the Athletics’ claim was filed after the 24-hour claiming period had expired. Charlie Finley knew this before Clinton reported to the Athletics, but manager Haywood Sullivan, fed up with Finley’s second-guessing, didn’t answer the telephone during the game, and therefore didn’t find out.

The Giants take over 1st place for the first time this season as reliever Masanori Murakami wins 3 – 1 in Los Angeles, dropping the Dodgers to 2nd place by .002 percentage points. The Giants have now won four straight and will win their next 10.

In a promotion to increase Kansas City’s poor attendance, Bert Campaneris becomes the first major leaguer to play all nine positions in a single game. After being involved in a collision at home plate in the ninth inning, Campy is replaced by Rene Lachemann as the team’s catcher in the A’s eventual 5-3, 13-inning victory over California.

1965 – The Pirates sweep Cincinnati, 3 – 1 and 4 – 2, knocking Cincy out of second place while pulling themselves to within four games of first-place Los Angeles in the bunched-up National League race. 7th-inning doubles decide both halves of the twin bill: Gene Alley’s in the opener, and Willie Stargell’s in the nitecap. Crucial to both contests are Roberto Clemente’s contributions: a 1st-inning solo homer in the opener puts Pittsburgh up, 1 – 0, then, after Bob Veale’s 4th-inning wildness gives back that run, Clemente keeps the game tied by gunning down Charlie James at the plate with two out in the 6th. Game two remains scoreless until the 6th, when Tommy Helms’ two-out RBI single is accompanied by Tony Perez’s ill-advised attempt to challenge Clemente’s arm by going first to third. He is thrown out.

At Yankee Stadium, the Red Sox sweep two from the Yankees, winning 1 – 0 and 7 – 2. Mickey Mantle’s homer in the second game, off Dennis Bennett, is the only bright spot for New York.

The Reds score three runs in the 9th to edge the Phillies, 5 – 4. Deron Johnson drives in the last two runs with a single.

In preparation of their move to Anaheim, CA the Los Angeles Angels change their name to the California Angels.

The Mets top the Cards, 6 – 3, behind the slugging of Jim Hickman, who cranks three home runs off Birds pitcher Ray Sadecki. Hickman is the first Mets player to hit three home runs in a game.
