Los Angeles Angels pitcher Dick Wantz dies following surgery for brain cancer. The 25-year-old Wantz had made his debut only one month earlier, pitching one inning in relief in his only major league appearance.
In the second game of a doubleheader, Cleveland and Boston combine for nine double plays, tying an American League record.
The Elmira Pioneers beat the Springfield Giants, 2 – 1, in 27 innings, a new record (since broken) for Organized Baseball’s longest game. The attendance is 386 fans. Fred Beene picks up the win, pitching the last 12 innings. The game is scoreless for 25 innings, with both teams scoring in the 26th; finally, Elmira, managed by Earl Weaver, breaks through in the 27th.
1964 – Baltimore Orioles third baseman Brooks Robinson is voted American League Most Valuable Player, outpolling Mickey Mantle of the New York Yankees 269 to 171.
1964 – After just 11 years in Milwaukee, the Braves’ Board of Directors votes to ask the National League for permission to move to Atlanta. Milwaukee County officials sue to block the move.
