Things have not been going so well on the mound for Brewers pitcher Yovani Gallardo this year, but today it’s with his bat that he gives his team a win. Called upon as a pinch-hitter in the 10th inning against the Orioles, he hits a double off T.J. McFarland to drive in Mark Reynolds from first base for a 7 – 6 win. The Orioles had walked Reynolds intentionally with two outs and the bases empty, knowing P Francisco Rodriguez was due up next and that Milwaukee had used all of its position players already. However, Gallardo, who boasts a lifetime .202 batting average and 12 homers, makes them pay for their presumption that pitchers cannot hit.

One day after teammate Josh Beckett’s no-hitter, the Dodgers’ Hyun-Jin Ryu makes a bid to repeat the feat as he begins his start against the Reds with seven perfect innings before Todd Frazier doubles to lead off the 8th. No team has ever pitched back-to back no-hitters, but combined with the hitless 9th inning recorded by Paul Maholm on May 24th, the Dodgers tie a record set by the Angels in 2012 with 17 consecutive innings without allowing a hit. They win the game, 4 – 3.

Josh Beckett of the Dodgers records the first no-hitter of the year by blanking the Phillies, 6-0. It is the first no-hitter by a Dodgers pitcher since Hideo Nomo pitched one in 1996, and the first nine-inning no-hitter by an opposing pitcher in Philadelphia since Bill Stoneman of the Montreal Expos back in 1969.

The Red Sox lose their 8th straight, bowing 1 – 0 to the Rays on a pinch-hit double by Cole Figueroa in the bottom of the 9th, Figueroa’s first career RBI. The Sox also lose RF Shane Victorino, who leaves the game in the top of the 9th after aggravating a pulled hamstring.

The Brewers badly botch a pitching change in the 7th inning of a 5 – 4 loss to Atlanta. Manager Ron Roenicke goes to the mound after pinch-hitter Ryan Doumit is announced into the game and summons lefthander Will Smith to replace Brandon Kintzler. Problem is, no one is warming up in the Brewers’ bullpen. Smith has to rush to the mound and only gets the maximum 8 pitches to get ready. Doumit then rips a single to left, bringing in the tying and go-ahead runs. Roenicke blames the foul-up on miscommunication with Rick Tomlin, filling in as pitching coach in the absence of both Rick Kranitz and bullpen coach Lee Tunnell.

White Sox ace Chris Sale is sparkling in his return from the disabled list as he retires 18 of 19 Yankees batters he faces over 6 innings to lead the Sox to a 3 – 2 win. Zoilo Almonte soils the no-hit bid with a two-out single in the 6th as Sale improves to 4-0.

What does the Cubs’ Jeff Samardzija have to do to get a win? Today, the major leagues’ ERA leader pitches 7 scoreless innings, but Hector Rondon blows a 2 – 0 9th-inning lead against the Yankees to send the game into extra innings. In the 13th, Yankees pitcher Preston Claiborne lays down a perfect sacrifice bunt in his first major league plate appearance as part of a two-run rally, Jose Veras throws a wild pitch to let in a first run and back-up catcher John Ryan Murphy drives in another with a single as the Bronx Bombers end up on top, 4 – 2. Samardzija is 0-4 in spite of a 1.46 ERA.

Chris Davis has a three-homer day to lead the Orioles to a 9-2 win over the Pirates. The second three-homer game of his career doubles his total for the year, a far cry from his breakout season in 2013 when he hit 9 long balls in April alone on his way to 53, tops in the majors and a Baltimore club record.

Masahiro Tanaka suffers his first loss in the majors when the Cubs beat the Yankees, 6 – 1, behind Jason Hammel. Tanaka was unbeaten in 42 straight regular season starts, since August 19, 2012, including a perfect 24-0 season in Nippon Pro Baseball in 2013, although he had lost a postseason start during the streak.

Mike Hessman of the Toledo Mud Hens connects for his 400th minor league homer, against Scott Diamond of the Rochester Red Wings in an International League contest. Hessman is only the 8th player to reach the mark, and the 4th to do it entirely in U.S.-based leagues, as the top four minor league home run hitters of all time all spent the bulk of their career in Mexico.
