1900 – At the National League meetings at the Fifth Avenue Hotel in New York, rumors fly. Ban Johnson says the American League has signed a lease on a park in Detroit. The Players Protective Association says its members will not sign with the NL.
09/19/1900: Brooklyn’s Hughie Jennings had hit a homer in the bottom of the first against St. Louis. However, in the bottom of the third a dispute between the Cardinals and the umpire resulted in the game being forfeited. (See forfeits page for details.) Since the game had not yet gone long enough to be official, the records did not count and Jennings’ homer was lost.
Approximately one thousand people in the crowd of 10,000 fans attending the game at Chicago’s West Side Grounds celebrate Independence Day by firing pistols into the air. The Orphans shoot down the visiting the Philadelphia team in 12 innings, 5-4.
1900 – New York Giants pitcher Cy Seymour scatters 10 hits and issues 11 walks, but manages to beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 10 – 3. Despite the win, the Giants farm out Seymour to the Worcester Farmers of the Eastern League after the game. Seymour will later return to the majors as an outfielder.
Pirates’ first baseman Duff Cooley has only two putouts in a 6-5 loss to the Phillies at the Baker Bowl. The left-handed swinging Texan patrols mostly in the outfield, but plays all positions, becoming one of baseball’s first utility players.
1900 – Fielder Jones‚ who will hit 20 homers in his 15-year career‚ hits the first homer of the year at Washington Park. But Brooklyn loses‚ 7 – 4‚ to Chicago.
1900 – Brothers Joe, Jim, and Tom Delahanty, playing their third year together with the Allentown Peanuts, open the Atlantic League season by banging out a family total of 11 hits for 20 total bases.
At Schorling’s Park on Chicago’s south side, the White Sox, as a minor league team, play their first game in franchise history, losing to Milwaukee, 5-4. The small wooden ballpark located at 39th and Princeton, also known as Southside Park, will continue to be the Windy City home for the team when they join the American League next season.
1900 – The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Boston Beaneaters, 19 – 17, in 10 innings to set a major league record for most runs scored by two clubs on opening day. The Braves score nine runs in the 9th inning to put the game into extra innings.
1900 – At an American League meeting in Chicago, Ban Johnson announces that an A.L. team will be placed in the Windy City to ensure the stability of the league. Other franchises are in Kansas City, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Detroit, Cleveland, and Buffalo. In an agreement with Chicago National League officials, the A.L. club will be situated on the south side of the city and will be permitted to use the nickname Chicago White Stockings, formerly used by the N.L. team. However, the White Stockings will not be able to use the word Chicago in their official name. The new franchise, known as the White Sox, will be the 1901 A.L. champion in the junior circuit’s inaugural season as a major league.
