The Minnesota Twins suffered their first rainout at home since 1980, being forced by weather to re-schedule today’s game against the Orioles as part of a day-night doubleheader on May 8th. The Twins played indoors at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome from 1982 to 2009, before moving to outdoors Target Field this year. However interestingly enough, they also did not have a rainout in 1980 or 1981 before moving indoors.

The Phillies take over first place in the NL East by beating Mets ace Johan Santana like a rag doll. Santana gives up 10 runs, including 8 in the 4th inning, which he fails to complete. With the Mets leading 5 – 3, he issues a two-out bases-loaded walks to his opposite, Jamie Moyer, then Shane Victorino blasts a grand slam to open the floodgates. Chase Utley adds a two-run shot to chase Santana; Placido Polanco and Ryan Howard had homered earlier against him. The Phillies win, 11 – 5.
The Mets sweep the Dodgers in a doubleheader, 4 – 0 and 10 – 5, to extend their winning streak to 6 games and to record their 8th win in their last 9 games. Jason Bay hits his first home run as a Met in support of Johan Santana’s pitching in the opener, while David Wright drives in four runs in the nitecap.
The Phillies sign their star first baseman Ryan Howard to a five-year contract extension worth between $125-138 million. The deal should help set the price-tag for three other first basemen who may become free agents at the end of the season, Adrian Gonzalez, Prince Fielder and Albert Pujols. However, Howard will go into rapid decline and his huge contract will prove to be an albatross for the Phils.

The Yankees turn their first triple play in 42 years when Alex Rodriguez steps on third to start a 5-4-3 around-the-horn play that results in three outs in a 4-2 loss to the A’s in Oakland. The team’s last triple killing occurred in June of 1968, on a 1-5-3 ground ball hit by Minnesota’s John Roseboro, a play started by pitcher Dooley Womack, continued by third baseman Bobby Cox, and finished by Mickey Mantle, who was playing first base.
