Home plate umpire Angel Hernandez ejects Steve “Mongo” McMichael from Wrigley Field as the former Chicago Bears football player is about to sing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the seventh-inning stretch. McMichael, presently a pro wrestler, tells the crowd over the P.A. system “he’ll have a talk with the ump” concerning a close call made by Hernandez earlier in the game and then boos and blows a kiss toward the ump.

Passing the mark of 68 established by Christy Mathewson (Giants – 1913) and Randy Jones (Padres – 1976), Braves right-hander Greg Maddux sets the National League record for consecutive innings without allowing a walk as he pitches six innings without a giving up a base on balls to extend the new record to 70.1 innings. The major league record is 84.1 innings without a free pass, established in 1962 by A’s sinker-slider hurler Bill Fischer.

In a day-night doubleheader, Vinny Castilla of the Houston Astros becomes the 13th player this season to hit three home runs in a game when he does it against Pittsburgh, but the Pirates still edge the Astros, 9 – 8, with an amazing comeback. Pittsburgh becomes only the second team in National League history to win a game by scoring seven runs starting with two outs and nobody on base in the 9th inning. Brian Giles caps the scoring with a walk-off grand slam off Astros ace closer Billy Wagner to win it. The Cubs did it, against the Reds, in the first game of a doubleheader on June 29, 1952.

The Brewers lose their 11th in a row as the Dodgers whip them, 7 – 2. Shawn Green and Gary Sheffield homer in the six-run 5th inning.

Arizona defeats San Diego, 3 – 0, in the completion of a game that was suspended after two innings on July 18th. Randy Johnson strikes out 16 batters in his seven innings in relief of Curt Schilling to break the major league mark for relievers set by Walter Johnson on July 25, 1913. He allows just one hit – C Wiki Gonzalez’s 8th-inning single – for the Padres’ only hit in the contest. In addition to setting the record for Ks in a game by a reliever, Johnson also sets the National League reliever record with seven consecutive strikeouts. Johnson is one shy of the major league mark, set by Ron Davis, on May 4, 1981.

Braves 1B Rico Brogna announces his retirement, effective immediately, opening a spot for Bernard Gilkey. The injury-plagued Brogna will coach high school football. Without him, the Braves win, 4 – 0, behind Greg Maddux’s 34th career shutout. Maddux strikes out nine and walks none.
