On July 27, 1995, Hall of Fame catcher Rick Ferrell dies at the age of 89. Considered an excellent defensive receiver, Ferrell held the American League record for most games caught until the mark was surpassed by fellow Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk.
In the top of the fourth inning, Dante Bichette puts the Rockies ahead, 6-4, with a three-run home run off Jim Deshaies at Philadelphia’s Veterans Stadium. The round-tripper is the 18th of the season for the 31 year-old outfielder, but only his first on the road.

Lee Smith becomes the third hurler in major league history to give up two game-ending grand slams in the same season when Albert Belle goes yard, giving the Indians a dramatic 7-5 victory over the Angels at Jacobs Field. At the end of last month, the 37 year-old closer yielded a walk-off four-run round-tripper to A’s slugger Mark McGwire.
Greg Maddux of the Braves defeats the Padres, 4 – 1. His streak of 51 innings without issuing a walk is ended when he gives up a free pass to opposing pitcher Joey Hamilton, a career .041 hitter.
Atlanta P Greg Maddux shuts out the Dodgers, 1 – 0. In the process, he extends his streak of innings without issuing a walk to 49.
1995 – Andres Galarraga of Colorado goes 6-for-6 with two homers and five RBIs as the Rockies take a 15-10 slugfest over Houston at Coors Field. Derek Bell and James Mouton go deep for the Astros but it’s not enough to offset the 21-hit assault of Colorado.

On July 3, 1995 Colorado downs Houston by a score of 15 – 10 at Coors Field. The Rockies’ attack is led by 1B Andres Galarraga, who strokes three singles, a double, and two home runs, while driving home five runs and scoring four. The victory moves Colorado one game ahead of the idle Dodgers for first place in the National League West….
1995 – Houston explodes for eight runs in the fifth inning while blanking the Pirates, 11-0. Brian Hunter delivers two hits and scores twice in the inning as well as doubling in a pair. Craig Biggio singles twice on the night to record his 1000th hit. Shane Reynoldshurls a six-hit shutout.
