The White Sox hold off the Indians, 5 – 1, while Boston racks up 18 hits in an 11 – 7 win over the Orioles. The Tigers lose a tough one. Going into the bottom of the 9th in Washington, Detroit nurses a 4 – 2 lead, only to lose it, 5 – 4. The loss drops Detroit to 4th, 1 1/2 games behind Minnesota, Chicago a game back, and Boston a half game.
Wes Westrum (57-94) resigns as manager of the Mets following a 4 – 3 loss to the Dodgers. Coach Salty Parker takes over and will be 4-7 for the rest of the season. Two days later the board of directors announces it will try to obtain Gil Hodges as manager.
Bob Gibson pitches St. Louis to a 5 – 1 win and its 2nd pennant of the decade.
Minnesota keeps pace by beating Kansas City, 2 – 0, behind Jim Kaat’s six-hitter. The White Sox lose, 3 – 2, to the Angels when Rick Reichardt hits a 9th-inning RBI single. Boston, Detroit, and Minnesota are now tied for 1st, with Chicago in 4th place, a half-game back.
Norm Cash drives in five runs and John Hiller goes the distance, enabling Detroit to take the American League lead with a 9 – 1 win over the Yankees.
At Candlestick Park, San Francisco hurler Gaylord Perry’s 40-inning team record consecutive scoreless streak comes to an end as the Cubs score an unearned run in the seventh inning of a 2-1 victory over Fergie Jenkins and the Cubs. The future Hall of Famer will match his franchise mark with another string of scoreless innings in 1970.
1967 – Jim Wynn smashes two home runs, his 34th and 35th of the year, to drop the Dodgers, 5-3. Wynn becomes the first in franchise history to reach 100 RBIs. Mike Cuellar wins his 14th of the year.
The Tigers move into a first-place tie with the Twins, as Eddie Mathews and Jim Northrup hit home runs, and Mickey Lolich beats Tommy John, 4 – 1, at Chicago.
Cincinnati’s Bob Lee walks Dick Groat with the bases loaded in the 21st inning to give the Giants a 1 – 0 victory at Crosley Field. Twenty scoreless innings tie the major league mark set by the Pirates and the Braves on August 1‚ 1918‚ a game Pittsburgh also won in the 21st‚ 2 – 0. Gaylord Perry‚ with 9 one-run losses during the season‚ pitches the first 16 innings of shutout ball‚ with Frank Linzy going the last 5. Mel Queen tosses 9 1/3 innings for the Reds.
The Cubs start a streak of four straight doubleheaders by beating the Mets‚ 8 – 2‚ behind Fergie Jenkins’ 17th win. Former Cub Don Cardwell wins the nitecap‚ 3 – 0‚ striking out 11.
