1927 – The Philadelphia A’s Ty Cobb makes what is celebrated at the time as his 4,000th hit, a double off Sam Gibson of Detroit. Detroit wins, 5 – 3, over Lefty Grove. Research will later reveal that he had two fewer hits than was thought at the time, and that number 4,000 actually three days later, on July 21st.
Chicago admirers present Eddie Collins, now with the A’s, with a new automobile. The A’s send out a lineup featuring Collins, Ty Cobb and Zack Wheat, all of whom have at least 2,500 hits entering the game. The next team to that will be the 2012 Yankees.
Pete Mann, an infielder with the Macon Peaches, is killed by a pitch from Tom Farrell of the Asheville Tourists. Asheville skipper Larry Gardner, in a second sad note, had been a teammate of Ray Chapman when he died from a pitch.
On July 7, 1927, the Washington Senators acquire left-handed pitcher Tom Zachary from the St. Louis Browns for right-hander Alvin “General” Crowder. Zachary will gain notoriety when he surrenders Babe Ruth’s record-breaking 60th home run later in the season.
Alphonse “Tommy” Thomas pitches a 5 – 1 win over the Browns, the 6th time this season that the White Sox pitcher has beaten St. Louis. He last beat them on June 22. Lefty Stewart, who gives up a homer to Earl Sheely in the 6th, takes the loss.
At Chicago, Lena Blackburne, filling in for manager Ray Schalk, ejected earlier in the game by Brick Owens, inserts himself as a pinch hitter in the 9th and singles. He comes around to score the winning run as the White Sox edge the Indians, 8 – 7.
With the help of a 3rd-inning triple play, the Tigers down the White Sox, 6 – 5, in 11 innings. Ted Lyons loses again, to reliever Earl Whitehill.
On June 19, 1927 Jack Scott performs an ironman feat and becomes the last pitcher to go the distance in both ends of a doubleheader.
