At Philadelphia Park, Tommy Corcoran leaves his shortstop position and begins digging around the third base coaching box with his spikes. The Reds’ captain uncovers a metal box with an electrical device inside with attached wires which is most likely being used by the Phillies in a sophisticated scheme to steal signs.
1900 – The Giants batter P Nixey Callahan for 23 hits in a 14 – 3 win over the Chicago Orphans. In the 2nd game, a 3 – 3 tie called because of darkness after nine innings, Chicago rookie C Johnny Kling debuts with 3 for 4 at the plate.
1900 – While riding on the steps of a crowded streetcar in Philadelphia, Phils 3B Harry Wolverton is struck in the head by a pole beside the tracks, suffering a possible skull fracture. He recovers and finishes his major league career as a player-manager for the Highlanders in 1912.
1900 – Matching Buck Freeman’s feat of five weeks ago, Brooklyn’s Bill Dahlen laces two triples in the 8th inning as his team beats Philadelphia, 14 – 3.
1900 – In American League action, Rube Waddell throws two complete games as Milwaukee sweeps a doubleheader from the Chicago White Stockings, 2 – 1 and 1 – 0. After throwing 17 innings in the first game, the colorful southpaw is coaxed by skipper Connie Mack, who promises him a few days off to go fishing to pitch the nightcap, he hurls a five-inning one-hitter.
1900 – Reds pitcher Bill Phillips punches Phillies batter Roy Thomas after Thomas fouls off a dozen pitches in the 8th inning. Phillips is ejected but the Reds win in the 11th.
The Boston Beaneaters score 13 runs in the 1st inning against the Cardinals on 10 hits, including two triples by Buck Freeman, and four errors. The game is shortened by rain after six innings and Boston wins, 18 – 5.
1900 – In the last of the 9th at Brooklyn, with two outs and the score tied at 5 – 5 with the Reds, an intentional walk to Deacon McGuire goes awry. McGuire reaches out and taps a Noodles Hahn pitch, but the catcher picks it up, then drops it, and the winning run scores.
At Brooklyn’s Washington Park, the Superbas tie the score against the Giants in the 5th. Then, with two men on base, New York captain George Davis takes out pitcher Ed Doheny and brings in rookie Christy Mathewson, just brought up from Norfolk where he was 20-2. He hits 3 batters, walks 2, and gives up 6 runs in a 13-7 loss, charged to Doheny. The New York Times says, “Matty has lots of speed and gives promise of making his way.” Doheny also plunks a batter, while Brooklyn’s Joe McGinnity hits two for a combined 6 hit batsmen in the game, a record, since tied.
Billy Barnie, veteran manager in the American Association and the National League, dies at the age of 47. He last managed the Brooklyn Bridegrooms, in 1898.
