Biography
The future all-star was born on April 19, 1908, in what was then a very rural Odenton, Maryland. One of ten children, Phelps and his siblings would play baseball in the abundant space of open fields that dominated the Maryland countryside.
the lefthanded batter hit .367 in 1936, the record for a catcher qualifying for the batting title. Hypochondria and a refusal to fly (The Grounded Blimp) limited Phelps’ career.
