Babe Ruth becomes first player to hit 60 homeruns

On September 30, 1927, The New York Yankees were up 19 games in the standings, with a World Series appearance long since clinched only 8,000 fans attended the 154th game of the season this Friday afternoon game, even though history was in the balance! Babe Ruth had matched his league record 59 home runs, and he had a chance to hit is 60th home run, it was in doubt until the end, when Ruth victimizes Tom Zachary of the Washington Senators, the blast comes in the 8th inning of a tie game 2-2, which lands just in fair territory in the right-field stands. Ruth’s home run would give the Bombers a 4-2 victory. As a pinch hitter in the ninth inning, future Hall of Fame hurler Walter Johnson makes his last major league appearance in this game. He pinch-hits for Zachary and flies out to Ruth. Ruth hits 17 homers in September, the highest month’s home run output till Rudy York’s 18 in August 1937.

Ruth had set the previous record of 59 in 1921. Ruth will hit 54 in 1928 and never hit 50+ again in a season. It will be 34 years until another player hits 60+ homeruns.
