On January 19, 1937, in their second annual Hall of Fame election, the Baseball Writers Association of America elects second baseman Napoleon Lajoie, outfielder Tris Speaker and pitcher Cy Young to the Cooperstown shrine. The trio will be honored at the Hallās first induction ceremony in 1939 joining, last yearās inaugural selection of Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, and Walter Johnson as inductees of baseballās new Hall of Fame.
The Centennial Commission, a small group of the gameās executives charged with the task of picking individuals overlooked by the 1936 Veterans election, which failed to name any 19th-century players, selects Connie Mack, John McGraw, Morgan Bulkeley, Ban Johnson, and George Wright to be included Cooperstown ceremony.
