On April 16, 1957 — Before the Phillies’ home opener, the team dedicates a statue of Connie Mack as part of the Opening Day ceremonies. The eight-foot statue of the ‘Tall Tactician,’ which depicts the A’s long-time owner and manager with one foot in the dugout and one foot on the top step of it, waving his trademark scorecard to position his players, was created by well-known sculptor Harry Rosin. The Phillies lose, 7-6 in 12 innings vs the Brooklyn Dodgers. Future Hall of Famer Robin Roberts pitches the complete-game loss giving up 3 home runs to the bums including an 8th inning blast to Gil Hodges to tie the game and a 12th inning shot to Gino Cimoli.
