Yale grad Hutchison played weekend ball as a hobby and from there went straight to the majors. Pitching for average Cubs teams, he led NL hurlers three straight years in wins, complete games, and innings pitched, despite competition from Amos Rusie, Cy Young, and Kid Gleason. His worst ERA in that stretch was 2.81, but he was out of the ML four years later.
