Boston American hurler Jesse Tannehill no-hits the White Sox, 6-0.

On August 17, 1904 — At Chicago’s South Side Park Boston American hurler Jesse Tannehill no-hits the White Sox, 6-0.  The 30-year-old southpaw issues one one walk, hits a batter and strikes out three en route, tossing the third no-hitter in the brief history of the American League. The Americans will change their name to the Red Sox for the 1907 season.

From the Boston Globe August 18, 1904 . . .

A few weeks ago, there was some talk of Jesse Tannehill’s going back and not being in the game with the other Boston pitchers, Bill Dineen and Cy Young. But on the western trip just ended, had It not been for Tannehill, the team would have been far down the list, instead of returning home just one behind the leaders, New York and Chicago. Boston played 16 games on the trip, splitting eight of the victories which came to Boston 5 were gained by Tannehill who wound up yesterday by shutting out Chicago without a run or a hit, and .almost equalling Young’s record of May 5, when “cy” held Philadelphia down to no runs, no hits and did not allow a man to reach first.

Tannehill’s record was only spoiled by a base on- balls and by hitting a White sox batter. Tannehill did not lose on the trip and recorded five wins.
