Brooks Robinson Retires

On August 21, 1977, Baltimore Orioles third baseman and future hall of famer Brooks Robinson retires.

Spending his entire career with the Baltimore Orioles, he was nicknamed the Human Vacuum Cleaner and is universally considered the greatest defensive third baseman in MLB history. Brooks won 16 consecutive Gold Glove Awards, was an All-Star in 15 seasons, won the 1964 AL MVP Award, was named the MVP in the 1970 World Series, and was a key player on 2 World Series champions (1966, 1970). His uniform #5 is retired by the Orioles. Robinson was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1983 (91.9% on the 1st ballot).

 

In his 23-year career (1955-1977), Brooks had 2,848 hits, 268 HR, 1,357 RBI, .267 BA, .322 OBP, .401 Slg., & .712 OPS.
