On November 7, 1979 — Chicago Cubs closer Bruce Sutter wins the 1979 National League Cy Young Award by a 72-66 margin over Houston Astros starter Joe Niekro. Joe ties with his brother Phil for the league lead in victories with 21. J.R. Richard finishes third in the voting despite leading the league in ERA (2.71) and strikeouts 313.
