On November 9, 1999 — Kansas City Royals outfielder Carlos Beltran is named the American League Rookie of the Year. Beltran became the first rookie with 100 or more RBI since Mike Piazza had 112 in 1993 and the first in the AL since Mark McGwire had 118 in 1987. Beltran is also the first rookie with a 100 run-100 RBI season since Fred Lynn in 1975.
Beltran, slash line .293/337/454, he hit 22 home runs. Beltran will go on to hit 435 home runs and become a historic postseason performer. hitting 16 home runs in 65 games. Although as of this writing Beltran is not eligible for the Hall of Fame, he has an excellent chance to become enshrined in Cooperstown.
