2004 – Roger Clemens cools off the Cardinal bats with seven innings of four-hit ball as the Astros win Game Three of the N.L.C.S., 5-2. Jeff Kent homers in the opening frame and Houston nurses a 3-2 advantage until Carlos Beltran and Lance Berkman drill solo shots to give the bullpen some breathing room . St. Louis still leads the best-of-seven series, 2-1.

Hopes of retaining free agent center fielder Carlos Beltran are dashed when the deadline to re-sign him expires. Beltran had rejected a reported seven-year $105 million dollar offer, the richest in club history, before signing with the New York Mets a few days later.

2005 – Brad Ausmus doubles home Orlando Palmeiro in the bottom of the ninth to nip the Mets, 3-2. Rookie Ezequiel Astacio battles Pedro Martinez to a draw, helped by a solo homer from Adam Everett and an RBI squeeze bunt by Ausmus. The win puts Houston into a tie with Washington for the wild card slot after starting the season with a 15-30 mark. All the excitement overshadows the return of 2004 postseason hero Carlos Beltran who then rebuffed the Astros and signed with New York. Beltran is booed relentlessly by the sellout crowd as he struggles through an oh-for-four night. 

August 11, 2005

Mets outfielders Carlos Beltran and Mike Cameron, running at full speed in an attempt to catch Padres David Ross’ seventh-inning short fly to short right-center, dive head-first into each other in one of the most horrific collisions in baseball history. Right fielder Cameron, who suffers a broken nose and multiple fractures of both cheekbones, will undergo facial surgery in San Diego, and his teammate, center fielder Carlos Beltran, fares a bit better, suffering a concussion and a small fracture in his cheekbone.

Carlos Beltran hits his third grand slam within a calendar month, becoming the ninth player to accomplish the feat. The New York center fielder’s bases-filled homer is the Mets’ sixth, tying the 1996 Expos and 1999 Indians for most by a team in a calendar month.

For a new generation of fans, the term “the Catch” may conjure up memories of Endy Chavez’s NLCS Game 7 leaping catch at Shea’s left field fence with his outstretched glove, grabbing a ball destined to be a Scott Rolen two-run home run, and starting an unbelievable double play. The heroics are overshadowed in the ninth inning as Yadier Molina hits a two-run homer and Carlos Beltran, who has the best HR ratio (11/81) in postseason history, looks at a third strike with the bases loaded with Mets, giving the Cardinals a 3-1 victory and the pennant.

June 24, 2007

2004 – Roger Clemens becomes the majors’ first ten-game winner by nipping the Pirates, 3-2, but the buzz is about a three-way trade with Kansas City and Oakland that brings All-Star outfielder Carlos Beltran to Houston for closer Octavio Dotel, minor league catcher John Buck and cash. The Astros greet Beltran in fourth place in the Central Division, just four games over .500 and five games behind St. Louis in the standings.

4/2/2008: In the top of the 5th inning, the Mets Carlos Beltran hit a deep fly ball off the Marlins Matt Lindstrom to right-center field. The ball cleared the wall, struck a metal railing and bounced up in the air, landing back in the field of play. It was initially called a home run by third base umpire Jeff Kellogg. Kellogg was incorrectly overruled by second base umpire Rick Reed and Beltran was given a double, his third of the game.

In a 4-1 win over the Marlins at Dolphin Stadium, Mets third baseman David Wright scores in his 13th consecutive game, establishing a new franchise record. Teammate Carlos Beltran had set the previous team mark in 2006.

September 23, 2008

The Dodgers close in on the NL Western Division title, beating the Padres, 10 – 1. Manny Ramirez doubles home two runs and joins Carlos Beltran as the only major leaguers with 50 RBI in each league in a season.

Dickey baffles the Phillies with his knuckleball, throwing a complete game one-hitter, for the Mets’ second shutout in two nights, and their fourth consecutive shutout of the Phillies at Citi Field, dating back to a three-game sweep in May. The only hit is by opposing pitcher Cole Hamels. The Mets’ run scores with two outs in the 6th, on consecutive doubles by David Wright and Carlos Beltran.

The Texas Rangers acquire OF Jeff Francoeur from the Mets for IF Joaquin Arias. Hitting .236 with 11 homers and 53 RBI, Francoeur has been made redundant by the return to health of Carlos Beltran.

2011 – Carlos Beltran belts 3 homers and drives in 6 runs as the Mets beat the Rockies, 9 – 5, after a two-hour rain delay. Beltran homers from both sides of the plate and to all three fields in his power display. Ubaldo Jimenez, who set a Rockies season-record for wins in 2010, falls to 0-3.
