Diamondback southpaw Randy Johnson wins the NL Cy Young Award for the third time in his career, copping the prestigious pitching prize for the second consecutive season. The 37-year old ‘Big Unit’ struck out a league-leading 347 batters while posting a 19-7 record along with an ERA of 2.64 for the third-place team
Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Randy Johnson wins the National League Cy Young Award, his fifth overall and fourth in a row. Johnson is the first NL player since the Mets’ Dwight Gooden to win the pitching triple crown, going 24-5 with 334 strikeouts and a 2.37 ERA. Johnson also led the major leagues in strikeouts for the ninth time.
1997 – Pedro Martinez of the Montreal Expos breaks the stranglehold the veteran Greg Maddux and the Atlanta Braves have on the National League Cy Young Award. Since 1991, either Maddux or a Braves pitcher has captured the award. Martinez posted a 17-8 record with 305 strikeouts, a 1.90 ERA, and 13 complete games, giving Canada a clean sweep of the Cy Young this year. Roger Clemens of the Toronto Blue Jays won the American League award a day earlier. It’s a bittersweet moment for Montreal, as Martinez will be traded away a week later.
Atlanta Braves pitcher Greg Maddux wins the National League Cy Young Award for an unprecedented fourth straight time. Maddux had a remarkable 19-2 record with a 1.63 ERA, the second year his ERA is below 1.80.
1994 – Greg Maddux of the Atlanta Braves becomes the first pitcher in major league history to win three straight Cy Young Awards, unanimously sweeping the National League honor. Maddux posted a 16-6 record with a 1.56 ERA, the third-lowest in 75 years.
Greg Maddux (20-10, 2.36) wins his second Cy Young Award when he easily outpoints Bill Swift of the Giants and teammate Tom Glavine on ballots cast by the BBWAA. The 27 year-old right-hander becomes first hurler to win the prestigious pitcher prize in back-to-back seasons for different teams, having copped the award with the Cubs last season.
1990 – Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Doug Drabek, who posted a 22-6 record with 131 strikeouts and a 2.76 ERA, is named the 1990 National League Cy Young Award winner, collecting 23 of a possible 24 first-place votes.
1989 – San Diego Padres relief ace Mark Davis is selected the Cy Young Award winner in the National League. Davis saved 44 games while sporting an ERA of 1.85. In 1990, Davis will save only six games after signing a free agent contract with the Kansas City Royals.
1988 – Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Orel Hershiser, who posted a 23-8 record with 178 strikeouts and a 2.31 ERA, is a unanimous choice as Cy Young Award winner. Hershiser becomes the ninth pitcher in National League history to win the award unanimously. He receives all twenty-four first place votes from the Baseball Writers Association of America.
Dallas Keuchel is born in Tulsa, OK. The lefthander would become the third Astro to win a Cy Young Award, and the first in the American League, after his 20-win season in 2015.
