1924 – Washington Senators owner Clark Griffith names 2B Bucky Harris, last year’s team captain, as the new Nationals’ manager. Harris had annoyed Griffith by playing pro basketball over the winter, in violation of his contract, but the owner still tabs him the job. Harris, 28, team captain, is at spring training when he receives the offer by letter.
Giant manager John McGraw trades outfielders Casey Stengel and Bill Cunningham along with shortstop Dave Bancroft to the Braves for pitchers Joe Oeschger and Bill Southworth. Although the deal will have little impact for Boston or New York, three of the five players involved in the transaction, Stengel, Bancroft, and Southworth, will become major league managers and will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
1922 – The Philadelphia Phillies fire manager Kaiser Wilhelm. Veteran shortstop Art Fletcher succeeds him.
Outfielder Clyde Milan is named the new manager of the Washington Senators. Milan took over for George McBride at the end of last season after McBride was hit in the face with a ball during batting practice. McBride began suffering vertigo and fainting spells and relinquished the manager’s job.
1920 – On his 34th birthday, Ty Cobb signs to manage the Tigers for $32,500.
1919 – The Cincinnati Reds hire Pat Moran as their manager, replacing Christy Mathewson. Cincinnati makes the decision after failing to hear from Mathewson during his winter trip to Europe. Moran will guide the Reds to 96 victories and the World Championship this season.
On January 26, 1919, the St. Louis Cardinals name team president Branch Rickey as manager, replacing Jack Hendricks. Under Rickey’s leadership, the last-place Cardinals will improve only slightly in the standings, finishing seventh in 1919.
