1986 – The Astrodome hosts its second and last All-Star Game, a 3-2 American League victory. Houston fans could cheer hometown stars Glenn Davis, Kevin Bass, Mike Scott and Dave Smith . They could also cheer Boston’s Roger Clemens, another Texas legend, who is the winning pitcher and the game’s Most Valuable Player.
A very disappointed Oil Can Boyd (11-6, 3.71) begins shouting and throwing clothes in the Red Sox clubhouse after learning he had not been selected by KC manager Dick Howser to be one of the eight pitchers for the American League All-Star team. The inconsolable right-hander, who will storm out of Fenway Park before the team’s scheduled game against California, will be suspended without pay for three days for his tirade.
After allowing three runs in the top of the twelfth, the Red Sox score four times in the bottom of the inning, with the final tally coming on a walk-off bases-loaded balk. The winning run in Boston’s 8-7 improbable victory over the Angels when home plate ump Joe Brinkman rules Todd Fischer moved his hands after coming to a set position before throwing the first pitch of his outing, ending the Fenway contest without a ball being thrown.
The Padres trade P Tim Stoddard to the Yankees for P Ed Whitson, who had become the target of such fan abuse in New York that manager Lou Piniella would no longer pitch him in Yankee Stadium.
Atlanta’s Dale Murphy does not play in the Braves’ 7 – 3 win over the Phillies, ending his consecutive game streak at 740. Murphy hadn’t missed a game since September 1981.
1986 – Glenn Davis drills two home runs and drives in five as the Astros put a 12-1 hurt on the Expos. Kevin Bass caps the scoring with a grand slam. Mike Scott, soon to be named to the N.L. All-Star team, pockets the easy victory.
The first two Phillie hitters in the game – Gary Redus and Juan Samuel – hit home runs off Atlanta’s David Palmer.
In the A’s 6 – 3 win over Milwaukee, Tony Phillips of the A’s ties the major league mark with 12 assists at 2B. It’ll be matched again next month.
On the winning side, Al Newman cracks his first major league homer, off Zane Smith; it’ll be the only homer of his career, as Newman will go to the American League next year and set the junior circuit record by going to bat 1,893 times without a 4-bagger.
