LaMarr Hoyt picks up his 14th straight win and runs his season’s record to 9-0 by beating the Royals, 3 – 1, in Chicago.
Randy Bass swats a sacrifice fly off Dan Quisenberry to start a two-run rally and give the Rangers a 12-inning, 3 – 1 win over the Royals. Charlie Hough goes the distance for Texas, scattering six hits.
Larry Herndon of the Detroit Tigers hits three home runs in an 11 – 9 win over Oakland, and in the process becomes the 14th player in major league history to hit home runs in four consecutive plate appearances. On May 16th, he homered in his final at-bat to give the Tigers a 7 – 6 victory over Minnesota.
The Chicago White Sox beat the visiting Texas Rangers, 10 – 2, behind LaMarr Hoyt’s 13th consecutive win stretching back to 1981. Hoyt’s record at Comiskey Park is now 15-0.
Pirate pitcher Rick Rhoden makes his 12 – 9 win over the Reds a little easier when he doubles and homers in the Bucs’ nine-run 3rd inning. Johnny Ray drives in five runs in the big inning. The Reds make it close with eight runs in the 8th and 9th.
The Cubs become the first major league team to win 8,000 games when Allen Ripley and Lee Smith combine to shut out Houston in Chicago’s 5-0 victory at the Astrodome. The milestone comes in the 15,337th contest in the 107 year history of the franchise.
