At Yankee Stadium, 52,719 fans see Milwaukee jump on Ron Guidry for four runs in the 6th inning and beat New York, 5 – 1. It’s the most runs the Cy Young Award winner has allowed in a game since 1977. New York gets singles from their first three hitters, but manage to score just one run in the 1st inning off Mike Caldwell.

Jesse Orosco Joins the Mets as the Unforgettable Player to be Named Later
1979 – Minor league pitcher Jesse Orosco becomes the player to be named later, going to the New York Mets in compensation for pitcher Jerry Koosman, who had been sent earlier to the Minnesota Twins. Greg Field was the other pitcher Minnesota sent to New York; he will never appear for the Mets, whereas Orosco had a long stint with them.

The colorfully-clad Hall of Fame announcer, who will eventually do play-by-play for the Giants, is replaced by Steve Albert, the younger brother of the well-known NBA Knicks and NHL Rangers’ broadcaster, Marv Albert.

Sports cartoonist Willard Mullin, the creator of the lovable caricature known as the ‘Brooklyn Bum,’ dies in Corpus Christi at the age of 76. The cartoon featured a low-brow, working-class character who would proudly represent the borough of Brooklyn, quickly becoming a favorite of the Dodger fans.
