The Tribe’s transaction will prove to be short-sighted when the 21 year-old shortstop wins the American League Rookie of Year Award next season, and their newly acquired right-hander posts a 3-9 record with a 4.23 ERA.
The Baltimore Orioles sign pitcher Steve Stone, a reentry free agent formerly with the Chicago White Sox.
1978 – Alan Ashby is acquired from Toronto for pitcher Mark Lemongello, outfielder Joe Cannon and a minor leaguer. Ashby becomes a stalwart in Houston for the next decade, hitting .252 and providing steady defense behind the plate.
1978 – Ford Motor Credit Company buys full control of the Astros by purchasing remaining shares from General Electric Credit Company. They intend to look for a new buyer, while rumors swirl that the franchise may be moved out of Houston.
The New York Yankees sign pitcher Tommy John, a reentry draft free agent formerly with the Dodgers. John will be a valuable addition to the Yankees, winning 43 games in the next two seasons.
1978 – Todd Self is born in Shreveport, LA. The outfielder appears in 21 games during 2005 before being released, batting .200 with one homer.
1978 – The Yankees release pitcher Andy Messersmith, who will sign with the Dodgers. Messersmith never really recovered from the separated shoulder suffered in spring training.
The White Sox fire Larry Doby, who posted a 37-50 record for the fifth-place team as a mid-season replacement for skipper Bob Lemon. Owner Bill Veeck names 35 year-old shortstop Don Kessinger, obtained from St. Louis at the end of the 1977 campaign, as the club’s player-manager for next season.
