The Rangers lose 8 – 5 to the Orioles. When Omar Vizquel comes in as a defensive substitute for Texas, he becomes the third player in major league history to play shortstop at age 42, following Luke Appling (1949) and Honus Wagner (1916).

Zack Greinke continues to dominate opposing hitters as he pitches a second straight complete game for the Kansas City Royals. He strikes out 10 in a 6 – 1 win over Detroit. The Tigers’ lone run in the 5th inning is unearned, but it ends Greinke’s streak of 38 consecutive scoreless innings dating back to last season. He is nonetheless 4-0 with a virgin ERA so far this year, on his way to winning the AL Cy Young Award.

At Fenway Park, Mariano Rivera is charged with a rare blown save in the first matchup between the Yankees and Red Sox this season. With two outs in the 9th inning, Rivera gives up a two-run home run to Jason Bay to tie the score, 4 – 4. Kevin Youkilis homers over the Green Monster in the 11th for a 5 – 4 Boston win.

In Philadelphia, Dave Bush holds the Phillies hitless for 7 1/3 innings in a 6 – 1 Milwaukee win. The no-hit bid ends when pinch hitter Matt Stairs drives a pitch off the foul pole for a home run. Phillies starter Cole Hamels is hit in the shoulder by a line drive off the bat of Prince Fielder in the 4th inning and has to leave the game.

St. Louis beats the Mets, 12 – 8, to complete a three-game sweep at home. Albert Pujols homers twice and Rick Ankiel homers and doubles twice for the Cardinals.

Boston sweeps a day-night doubleheader with the Minnesota Twins at Fenway Park. Tim Wakefield pitches a seven-inning rain-shortened complete game in the opener as the Red Sox win, 10 – 1, then Brad Penny earns the 7 – 3 win in the nitecap. In the second game, in his first at-bat since being recalled from AAA to replace the injured Rocco Baldelli, Jeff Bailey hits a three-run homer off Francisco Liriano, who falls to 0-4 for the year.

Andy Pettitte picks up the win and Mariano Rivera gets the save when New York defeats Oakland, 5 – 3, in the first night game played at New Yankee Stadium. It is the 57th time that Rivera has saved a Pettitte win, tying the Oakland Athletics duo of Bob Welch and Dennis Eckersley of the late 1980s and early 1990s for the highest total in major league history.

The Cleveland Indians turn double plays in six straight innings in disposing of the Kansas City Royals, 8 – 7. Aaron Laffey is the beneficiary of this sparkling defensive performance, helped by Grady Sizemore’s three-run homer in the 4th inning. Kansas City rallies for 4 runs in the 8th, until Jensen Lewis forces Miguel Olivo to hit into the club-record-tying sixth twin killing of the night. Kerry Wood allows a two-run homer to David DeJesus in the 9th, but still picks up the save.

2009 – Randy Johnson takes a no-hitter into the 7th inning and combines with Bobby Howry and Brian Wilson for a 2 – 0 victory over the Diamondbacks. It is Johnson’s 296th win, but his first with the San Francisco Giants.

Daniel Cabrera reaches base safely for the first time in his six-year career when he walks on four straight balls thrown by Florida’s Hayden Penn. Prior to receiving the free pass, the Diamondbacks’ right-hander had previously struck out in all of his 18 major league at bats, setting a major league mark for consecutive strikeouts.
