They trail, 5 – 4, entering the 9th but Derrek Leeconnects safely against Rockies closer Manuel Corpas and Aramis Ramirez homers to make it 6 – 5. Chicago closer Kerry Wood fails to hang on to the win; he retires two batters but Scott Podsednik singles and Ryan Spilborghs triples to tie it. In the 10th, Kip Wells allows a single to Geovany Soto; Ryan Theriot later drives in the run with a single for a 7 – 6 edge. This time, it holds up, as Carlos Marmol notches the save; Wood is credited with the win and Wells suffers the loss.

The Reds switch general managers, replacing Wayne Krivsky with Walt Jocketty. Jocketty is the fourth Cincinnati Reds GM in just six years.

In a scheduling oddity, both New York big league teams play in Chicago, with the Mets playing the Cubs in a matinee, and the Yankees taking on the White Sox in an evening tilt. This unusual occurrence marks the first time in 11+ years that two teams from one city have both played as the visitors in the same city on the same date, a quirk likely necessitated due to the Pope’s weekend visit to the Bronx, whose appearance included a mass at Yankee Stadium two days ago.

In the longest game in franchise history, the Rockies beat the Padres, 2-1, in a 22-inning marathon played at Petco Park. The game, which ends at 1:31 am, takes 6 hours, 16 minutes to complete, falling one minute shy of San Diego’s record for the length of a game, but goes into the team record books for the most innings played to complete a contest.

Conor Jackson, needing only a double to complete the cycle, hustles instead to get his second triple of the game. The Diamondbacks outfielder’s unselfish offensive output helps to pace the club to a 9-0 win over the Padres.

The Padres and Rockies begin a marathon game at PETCO Park. The game goes 6 hours and 16 minutes and 22 innings, the longest major league contest in 15 years. 15 pitchers throw a combined 658 pitches. It is the third straight Padres-Rockies contest to go at least 13 innings. Kip Wells gets the victory. Neither starter Jake Peavy nor Jeff Francis allow a run; the game is scoreless through 12. In the 13th, coach Glenn Hoffman waives Paul McAnulty home but Brad Hawpe and Clint Barmes make fine throws to get McAnulty at home. In the 14th, Hawpe coaxes a bases-loaded walk from Kevin Cameron for the first run of the game. In the bottom of the 14th, though, Manuel Corpas allows a run when Josh Bard drives in Kevin Kouzmanoff. SS Troy Tulowitzki makes a game-saving throw home to prevent the Padres from winning the game in that inning. In the 22nd, CF Willy Taveras reaches on a Khalil Greeneerror. Taveras steals second and moves to third on Bard’s throwing error. Tulowitzki then singles off Glendon Rusch to finally end the game.

José López makes history by hitting three sacrifice flies in a 11 – 6 Mariners win over Kansas City. He is the 12th player in major league history to accomplish that feat. He drives in Willie Bloomquist twice and Kenji Johjima once.
