In the 13th inning, Tom Nevers, a first baseman for Chattanooga, takes the mound and pitches five innings. He gets the victory as the Lookouts beat the Huntsville Stars, 8 – 7, in 18 innings. He also goes 3 for 8 with a homer and two RBIs at the plate.

In a make-up game against the Angels, the Tigers host ‘Silent Night’. The fans hear no electronic, video, and commercial enhancements during Detroit’s 6-3 loss to Anaheim at Comerica Park.

The Athletics defeat Detroit, 4 – 0, as Cory Lidle, Ricardo Rincon, Chad Bradford, and Billy Koch combine on the one-hit shutout. Tiger OF Wendell Magee’s single is the only Detroit safety.

Cincinnati defeats San Diego, 15 – 10, as LF Russell Branyan slugs three home runs and drives home five runs for the Reds.

Darin Erstad agrees to a four-year contract extension worth $32 million to stay in Anaheim through 2006. The Angels’ center fielder joins Troy Glaus, Garret Anderson, and Tim Salmon as one of the key players the organization has signed at least through the 2004 season.

In just the first four innings, Edgar Martinez ties the major league record for sacrifice flies in a game with three. The Mariners’ designated hitter becomes the 11th player in history to accomplish the feat, doing it in his first three at-bats in Seattle’s 12-4 victory over the Indians.
