As part of a six-player deal, the Indians trade their #1 starter, right-hander Bartolo Colon, to the Expos for first baseman Lee Stevens, three minor league prospects and cash. Those three youngsters are SS Brandon Phillips, southpaw Cliff Lee and flycatcher Grady Sizemore, all of whom will become top-flight major leaguers.

6/27/2002: The Braves’ Gary Sheffield homered to left off Pedro Astacio in the top of the first inning at Shea Stadium in New York. The blast came with one man on base and one out. Sheffield doubled to left-center in the third inning but both extra-base hits were lost to rain.

2002 – Stunned by the death of ex-teammate Darryl Kile, Astro veterans Craig Biggio, Brad Ausmus and Jeff Bagwell sit out a game against the Seattle Mariners. But all come in to pinch hit as the game moves into extra innings with an emotional Bagwell singling home Julio Lugo with the winning run in the 12th for a 3-2 victory. Daryle Ward plates the other two runs. Ricky Stone wins in relief. 

A saddened Joe Girardi, the Cubs’ player rep, informs the Wrigley Field crowd the scheduled game between St. Louis and the Cubs is postponed due to the death of Darryl Kile, who is found dead in his Chicago hotel room as the result of coronary disease. The 33 year-old Cardinal right-hander is the first active major league player to pass away during the regular season since 1979, when Yankee captain Thurman Munson was killed while practicing landing his plane at the Akron-Canton Airport.
