The St. Louis Cardinals defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks, 4 – 1, behind rookie pitcher Bud Smith to even their NLDS at two games apiece. Fernando Viña hits a two-run home run for St. Louis.
2001 – Astros are swept by the Braves at Turner Field, 6-2, to close out another disappointing N.L.D.S, their third such fate at the hands of Atlanta in five years. Former Houston backup Paul Bako homers off Shane Reynolds and drives in three. Daryle Ward’s two-run blast is the only response for the Astros.
Atlanta defeats the Houston Astros, 6 – 2, to sweep their National League Division Series and move into the National League Championship Series for the ninth time in ten seasons. Paul Bako, Julio Franco and Chipper Jones hit home runs to back the solid pitching of starter John Burkett. The game is the Astros’ 14th loss in their last 16 postseason games.
Tom Kelly retires as the Twins’ skipper. During his 15-season tenure, the longest among current managers, he won two World Series titles and compiled a record of 1140-1244 for the small market team.
The Arizona Diamondbacks take a 2 games to 1 lead in their Divisional Series with St. Louis with a 5 – 3 victory. Craig Counsell’s three-run home run in the 7th inning is the deciding blow. Starter Miguel Batista gets the victory for the Diamondbacks.
Atlanta take a 2 games to 0 lead in their National League Division Series with the Astros behind Tom Glavine’s 1 – 0 victory. Shortstop Julio Lugo’s throwing error aids the winning run, which crosses the plate on a double play.
The Yankees fall to Oakland, 5 – 3, in Game 1 of their American League Division Series. Terrence Long hits a pair of home runs for Oakland and Jason Giambi adds another. Mark Mulder gets the win for Oakland while Johnny Damon goes 4 for 4.
The Cardinals even their NLDS by defeating Arizona, 4 – 1. Woody Williams notches the win for the Cardinals, behind a two-run home run from rookie Albert Pujols. Randy Johnson takes his record seventh consecutive playoff loss for Arizona.
2001 Shane Reynolds wins his 100th game as an Astro and it comes at the best possible time. He drops St. Louis, 9-2, to claim Houston’s fourth division title in five years . Richard Hidalgo blasts a two-run homer in the second off Darryl Kile and the Astros never look back . While the two clubs share 93-69 records, the Astros claim the title by winning nine of 16 head-to-head matchups.
