The Giants rout the Padres, 11 – 2, as Barry Bonds hits his 65th and 66th home runs of the season. The homers give Bonds a major-league record 34 road round-trippers. He also breaks Babe Ruth’s major league mark for most home runs over two seasons by a lefthanded batter (115).
The Mets donate their day’s pay, which totals approximately $500,000, from tonight’s game with the Braves at Shea to a rescue fund for the families of the firefighters and policemen killed in the World Trade Center terrorist attacks. The contest is the first professional baseball game played in New York since the tragedy.
The Brewers fall to the Reds, 5 – 2. In the process, they set a new major-league record for most strikeouts in a season with 1,272. The old mark of 1,268 was set by the Detroit Tigers in 1996.
The Cardinals defeat the Pirates, 9 – 5, as Albert Pujols hits his first career grand slam. The homer gives him a new major league rookie record for extra base hits in a season with 83. The old mark of 82 was set by Brooklyn’s Johnny Frederick in 1929.
Yankees closer Mariano Rivera blows a save, giving up a 2-run single to Jerry Hairston and the Orioles prevail, 7 – 6.
Ranger infielder Alex Rodriguez hits his 47th home run tying the major league record for home runs in a season by a shortstop. Cubs legend Ernie Banks established the record in 1958.
Major League Baseball and the Players Association announce the creation of the MLB-MLBPA Disaster Relief Fund. The organizations will each donate $10 million to aid the victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks.
Going wire-to-wire in first place, the Mariners become the first team to clinch a playoff berth this season by downing the Angels, 5 – 0, for their 106th win of the year.
In the Cardinals’ 8-2 victory over Milwaukee at Busch Stadium, Albert Pujols drives in three runs in his first two at-bats with a first-inning groundout and a two-run double in the fourth, breaking the National League rookie-record with his 120th run batted in this season. The 21 year-old first baseman, who will finish the year with 130 RBIs, surpasses the mark established in 1930 by Wally Berger, who played for the Boston Braves.
