Roger Clemens becomes the first major league pitcher to start a season with a 20-1 record when he goes 6.1 innings in the Yankees’ 6-3 victory over the White Sox at Comiskey Park. The eventual Cy Young Award winner, who has previously copped the award five times, has won his last 16 decisions for the Bronx Bombers but will drop next two decisions, finishing the season, 20-3 (.870).
Tampa Bay defeats Boston, 12 – 2, scoring a season-high eight runs in the 6th inning. Aubrey Huff has a career-high five RBIs for the Devil Rays.
2001 – In their first game since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the Astros stun Robb Nen with two runs in the ninth to edge the Giants, 3-2. Jeff Bagwell’s triple chases home Adam Everett before Moises Alou’s sacrifice fly breaks the tie. Mike Williams wins in relief while Billy Wagner notches his 37th save.
2001 – The Rockies came back from a 6 – 0 deficit in the 1st inning, in which they make five errors, and pound Curt Schilling to defeat the Diamondbacks, 10 – 9. The Rocks win it on dramatic back-to-back homers by Todd Helton and Jeff Cirillo off Byung-Hyun Kim in the bottom of the 9th. The D-Backs’ lead over San Francisco is now just 1 1/2 games.
Boston OF Carl Everett is suspended for four games by the Red Sox. Everett was late for a scheduled workout on Sunday and got into a shouting match with manager Joe Kerrigan after being told to go home.
