The Boston Red Sox make a pair of deals. The Sox purchase Juan Marichal from the San Francisco Giants for $100,000 and trade John Curtis, Lynn McGlothen, and Mike Garman to the St. Louis Cardinals for Reggie Cleveland and Diego Segui.
1973 – Slugger Jim Wynn is traded to the Dodgers for pitchers Claude Osteen and Dave Culpepper. A holder of many team records, Wynn rebounds to help the Dodgers to the National League title in 1974 while Osteen would own a 9-9 mark before being traded in mid-season.
The Dodgers trade OF Willie Davis to the Expos for relief pitcher Mike Marshall. Marshall will win the Cy Young Award for the Dodgers next season.
1973 – Cincinnati trades OF Bobby Tolan and P Dave Tomlin to San Diego for P Clay Kirby. All three will have decent years with their new teams.
1973 – The Chicago Cubs trade six-time 20-game winner Ferguson Jenkins to the Texas Rangers for third baseman Bill Madlock and utility man Vic Harris. Meanwhile, the San Francisco Giants trade three-time home run champion Willie McCovey, a Giant since 1959, together with minor leaguer Bernie Williams,to the San Diego Padres for pitcher Mike Caldwell.
Boston trades first baseman Ben Ogilvie to the Tigers in exchange for Dick McAuliffe. The former Detroit shortstop will hit only .210 in 100 games for his new team next season, but in 1975 the Hartford native will become the manager of the club’s Double-A farm team, the Bristol Red Sox, located in his home state of Connecticut.

Felipe and Matty will finish the season with their new teams, retiring the following season after brief stints with the Brewers and the Padres, respectively….
The Atlanta Braves release former 30-game winner Denny McLain, ending his career at the age of 28. In 1972, the Braves had acquired McLain from the Oakland Athletics in a straight-up swap for first baseman Orlando Cepeda. McLain won the American League Cy Young Award in 1968 and 1969.
On March 24, 1973, the Cleveland Indians trade former All-Star catcher Ray Fosse to the Oakland A’s for outfielder George Hendrick and catcher Dave Duncan. Fosse was once considered an untouchable before a serious injury suffered during a 1970 All-Star Game collision with Pete Rose.
On January 18, 1973, the Boston Red Sox sign veteran slugger Orlando Cepeda to be their first designated hitter. The Red Sox become the first team to sign a player specifically for the role of DH, a new rule that will go into effect in 1973.
