On July 7, 1927, the Washington Senators acquire left-handed pitcher Tom Zachary from the St. Louis Browns for right-hander Alvin “General” Crowder. Zachary will gain notoriety when he surrenders Babe Ruth’s record-breaking 60th home run later in the season.
Four days before the season opens, recently-traded Rogers Hornsby breaks the impasse by selling his stock in the St. Louis Cardinalsfor $112,000. He receives $86,000 from owner Sam Breadon, $2,000 from each of the other seven National League clubs, and an extra $12,000 from the New York Giants, his new team.
1927 – The Giants send versatile George Kelly, along with cash, to the Reds for truculent holdout OF Edd Roush. The Giants sent Roush to the Reds in 1916.
1927 – Pitcher Sad Sam Jones is traded by the New York Yankees to the St. Louis Browns in exchange for pitcher Joe Giard and outfielder Cedric Durst. Jones will be 8-14 in his only season in St. Louis.

On January 1, 1927, the Brooklyn Dodgers release longtime outfielder Zack Wheat, who had starred for the team for 18 seasons. Wheat leaves the Dodgers holding nearly every offensive record, and will play one final season with the A’s in 1927, batting .324. He is inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1959.
