The Kansas City Royals become only the sixth team in major league history to rally from a three-games-to-one deficit to win the World Series. Bret Saberhagen pitches a five-hit, 11 – 0 shutout over the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 7 and is named Series MVP.
In Game 6 of the World Series, Don Denkinger’s controversial ninth-inning call at first base enables the Royals to beat the Cardinals, 2-1. The play, in which Jorge Orta is called safe, when it appears first baseman Jack Clark’s throw to Todd Worrell, covering the bag, clearly beats him, gives Dane Iorg the opportunity to hit a two-run walk-off single and to extend the Fall Classic to a decisive Game 7 that Kansas City will win to capture its first World Championship.

Padres manager Dick Williams had ordered his pitcher to intentionally walk the Detroit right fielder, but Goose Gossage, after ignoring the walk sign at first, convinces his skipper he can get the slugger out, only to be proven wrong two pitches later.
1984 – A pair of two-run home runs by Alan Trammell of the Detroit Tigers provide all the scoring as pitcher Jack Morris beats the San Diego Padres, 4 – 2, in Game 4 of the World Series. The Tigers are now just one win away from the title.
