In the Yankees’ 13-1 rout of the Giants in Game 5 of the Fall Classic victory at the Polo Grounds, Gil McDougald, joining Elmer Smith (1920) and Tony Lazzeri (1936), becomes the third player in World Series history to hit a grand slam. The 23 year-old Yankees infielder is the first rookie to accomplish the feat.
