1926 – Babe Ruth hits three home runs to lead the Yankees to a 10 – 5 victory over St. Louis in Game 4 of the World Series. His 1st-inning curtain-raiser is a majestic 395-footer, exiting Sportsman’s Park over its right field bleacher roof. Home run number 2 clears the roof in right center, carrying 515 feet, breaking a window on the other side of Grand Avenue. Ruth’s final foray, however, is the main attraction, carrying deep into the never-before reached centerfield bleachers, far beyond the 430-foot mark. Estimated at 530 feet, it is deemed the longest home run in World Series history. Ruth, however, not content to dominate offensively, also delivers a crucial outfield assist, cutting down a runner at the plate, ending the Cardinals’ 3rd-inning rally. In the words of broadcaster Graham McNamee, “Babe Ruth nor no other man ever made a better throw. Babe shot it like an arrow and Hank Severeid did not have to move for it.” If all this weren’t enough, this also is the game during which the Babe makes good on his alleged pre-game promise to hit a home run for the bedridden young Johnny Sylvester.
1926 – In Game 3 of the World Series, Jesse Haines pitches a five-hit shutout as the Cardinals beat the Yankees, 4 – 0, to take a 2-1 lead in the Series.

1925 – Capping a comeback from a 3 – 1 deficit, Kiki Cuyler hits a bases-loaded double in the 8th inning to give the Pittsburgh Pirates a 9 – 7 victory over Walter Johnson and the Washington Senators in Game 7 of the World Series.
Before Game 1 of the World Series at Forbes Field, Commissioner Landis orders the Pirates and the Senators to wear black armbands in memory of former Giants legend Christy Matthewson, who died this morning at Saranac Lake, NY, of tuberculosis. Although the practice will become a common occurrence, this is believed to be the first time in major league history that teams have altered their uniform to acknowledged the passing of a fellow ballplayer.
1925 – At an American League meeting, a plan is adopted to alternate the site of future World Series openers by league rather than deciding it by a coin toss, with Games One, Two, Six, and Seven in one park and Three, Four, Five in the other, unless a ban on Sunday baseball interferes in one city. The clubs finishing fourth in the AL will share in the World Series pool. World Series umpires get a raise to $2,500, while umps in city series will earn $700. The plan was proposed in 1924, but is formally adopted at this meeting.
1924 – The two leagues agree on a permanent rotation for World Series play proposed by Charles Ebbets: the first two games at one league’s park, the next three at the other league’s park, and the last two if needed back at the first league’s park, with openers to alternate between leagues.
